Mosaic Formation

Diaspora Ministries

Mosaic Formation is committed to diaspora ministries.

Over the past 120 years the center of gravity of Global Christianity has shifted from Europe to the Global South. This same shift is well underway in North America, with Houston as a forerunner and bellwether of the demographic changes taking place in major cities and the church. African, Asian and Latin American diaspora Christians are migrating and planting churches as part of the greatest movement of peoples in the history of the world. First- and second-generation immigrant churches and Christians represent the new spiritual and numerical center of Christianity in North America and the greatest hope for renewing the church and revitalizing the city.

“Diaspora” is a Greek term referring to the “dispersion” (James 1:1), or, in other words, the nations that are here in North America.

For the past 15 years the Wu family has been involved with refugee ministry, and God has opened doors for Mosaic Formation to engage with global church leaders. As a ministry that seeks to “integrate global voices and foster mutual learning,” we view this as key to the development of Mosaic Formation.

Diaspora ministry is fundamental to Mosaic Formation’s mission. Immigrants and refugees are a historically underserved population, and Scripture commands us to care for them (Deut 10:18-19, Heb 13:2). The majority of refugees who have come to North America in the past 45 years are Christians who suffered persecution; they enrich us with a faith that has been tested by fire. Diaspora focus also highlights our spiritual identity as “strangers and aliens” on earth (1 Pet 2:11), as we await our heavenly citizenship (Heb 13:14).

We believe that in order to fulfill our mission, we must engage diaspora leaders—they will be our teachers and mentors, and in the near future they will be instrumental in the revitalization of the church in North America and beyond.

Cindy Wu serves as Mosaic Formation’s Director of Diaspora Ministries. In this role, she continues the work she has been doing for over a decade: mobilizing the Church to welcome refugees through education and community organizing, as well as providing spiritual formation care to workers serving the immigrant community- through coaching, spiritual direction, and retreat facilitation.

Diaspora Ministries

These are the ministries we are honored to be connected to.

Ride with Refugees

Cindy Wu is founder and director of Ride with Refugees, whose mission is to raise awareness about resettlement and empower refugees through mobility. In the fall, we host a slow-paced community bike ride through one of the most immigrant-dense and diverse neighborhoods in the nation, along with an activity fair at a local community center. Over a dozen non-profits, businesses, politicians, and community activists participate. The Afghan Women’s Bike Team was an expansion project out of RwR’s first year.

Refugee Highway Partnership North America

The Refugee Highway Partnership North America is a network of Christ-followers who share a common passion to see the Church minister the whole gospel amongst those who have been forcibly displaced – including the thousands of refugees and asylum seekers who arrive in North America each year. This is done by connect ing and mobilizing leaders, churches, and organizations to effectively engage with refugees.
